Home sauna electrical requirements in the UK

A traditional heater needs its own circuit, a registered electrician and a certificate. What that costs, and which saunas avoid it entirely.

The electrical work is the part of a sauna purchase that gets discovered late, usually after the cabin is ordered. A traditional heater cannot go on a socket, cannot share a circuit, and cannot be installed by anyone without a Part P registration. Budget £300 to £800 for it, and read the rest of this before choosing where the cabin goes.

What each heater size needs

Heater output determines the circuit. These are the standard pairings a UK electrician will work to, and the cable size depends on the length of the run as well as the load.

Output is set by the cabin's volume rather than by preference, so settle the kW rating the room needs before an electrician quotes for the circuit.

Part P and why it is not optional

Adding a new circuit is notifiable work under Approved Document P of the Building Regulations in England. In practice that means one of two routes: a registered competent person who self-certifies and issues the notification, or an unregistered electrician plus a building control application before work starts.

Almost everyone takes the first route, and the Planning Portal's guidance on Part P also allows a registered third-party certifier as an alternative. What you should receive at the end is an Electrical Installation Certificate plus a Building Regulations compliance notice. Keep both, because they are the first documents a buyer's solicitor asks for, and reproducing them years later means paying for a fresh inspection of an installation nobody can now see.

What the installation actually involves

  1. Check there is a spare way in the consumer unit, and that the board can take the extra load
  2. Run the cable from the board to the sauna, sized for the load and the distance
  3. Fit an RCD or RCBO for the circuit, which is standard on modern boards
  4. Terminate outside the hot room, since the switchgear must not sit inside the cabin
  5. Connect the heater and its control panel per the manufacturer's wiring diagram
  6. Test, certify and notify

Step four surprises people. The heater sits in the cabin but the isolator and controls do not, because the temperatures inside are well outside the rating of normal accessories. Modern heaters with an integrated panel are rated for it; separate control units are mounted outside the room.

Outdoor cabins add three complications

Running power down the garden is more work than running it to a spare bedroom, and the cost difference is mostly here. Position matters twice over, because where the cabin sits also decides whether the building needs planning permission, and moving it later means moving the cable too.

  • The cable is usually SWA armoured cable buried at depth, or clipped along a permanent structure
  • Cable size goes up with the run length to keep voltage drop inside limits, so a long garden costs more per metre than a short one
  • The garden building often gets its own small consumer unit, which also feeds the cabin lighting

A 30m armoured run to the bottom of a garden with the trench dug by the electrician is the upper end of the £300 to £800 range, and sometimes beyond it. If you can dig the trench yourself, that is the single biggest saving available on the job, and the cheapest moment to do it is while the ground is already open for the base the cabin will stand on.

The saunas that need none of this

Two categories plug into a normal 13A socket and skip every requirement above. Infrared cabins draw 1.6kW to 3kW, which a standard ring final circuit handles, and an infrared blanket draws about 600W. Nothing is notifiable, nothing needs certifying, and the cabin can move house with you. Running cost follows the same pattern: about 42p a session at Ofgem's current cap rate, against roughly £1.57 for a 6kW traditional cabin, and the working behind both sits in what a sauna costs to run.

The trade is heat: 30°C to 65°C rather than 80°C to 100°C, and no water on stones, which is the whole substance of the choice between infrared and traditional. Wood-fired outdoor cabins take a third route and need no supply at all beyond optional lighting, at the cost of tending a fire for an hour.

Questions worth asking before you book the job

  • Is there a spare way in the consumer unit, or does the board need replacing first?
  • What cable size does this run need, and is that included in the quote?
  • Who digs the trench, and is reinstatement of the lawn or paving included?
  • Does the price include the Electrical Installation Certificate and Part P notification?
  • Where will the isolator go, and is it accessible without entering the hot room?

Get the electrician to look at the consumer unit before you order the cabin. A board with no spare ways turns a £400 job into a £900 one, and it is far better to learn that while the order is still cancellable. Once it is in, the installation gets checked on the cycle the certificate specifies, which sits alongside the timber work in keeping an outdoor cabin in good order.

Frequently asked questions

Can I plug a sauna into a normal socket?

Only an infrared cabin or blanket. Traditional heaters from 3kW upward need a dedicated circuit run from the consumer unit, because the sustained load is far beyond what a 13A plug and a shared ring circuit are designed for.

What size circuit does a 6kW sauna heater need?

A dedicated 32A circuit is the usual specification for a 6kW heater, with cable sized for the length of the run. Your electrician will confirm both against the manufacturer's instructions and the distance from the board.

Do I need a special electrician for a sauna?

You need one registered under a competent person scheme so they can self-certify the notifiable work. Any qualified electrician can do the physical install, but without registration the job needs a building control application first.

How much does sauna electrical installation cost?

Is sauna wiring notifiable under Part P?

Can the sauna share a circuit with something else?

No. The heater must have its own dedicated circuit with nothing else on it, both because of the sustained load and because the isolation has to be unambiguous for safety.

Where does the isolator switch go?

Outside the hot room. Sauna temperatures exceed the rating of normal switchgear, so the isolator and any separate control unit are mounted in the adjoining space, with only the heater and its rated integrated panel inside.

What cable is used for an outdoor sauna?

Steel wire armoured cable, buried at a safe depth or clipped to a permanent structure, sized for the load and the run length. Longer runs need larger cable to keep voltage drop within limits.

Do wood-fired saunas need electricity?

Not for heat. A wood-burning stove needs no supply at all, though most owners run a lighting circuit for convenience. That makes wood firing the simplest option for a garden spot far from the house.

Does a sauna need three-phase power?

Not at domestic sizes. Heaters up to about 9kW run on single phase 230V. Three phase generally comes in above that, which is commercial territory rather than a home cabin.
