Infrared vs traditional sauna: which should you buy?

One heats the air, one heats you. The difference decides your install cost, your running cost and whether you will actually use it nightly.

Buyers usually arrive at this question with the wrong frame: which one is better. Neither is. They are different products that happen to share a name, and picking wrong means either a cabin you cannot install or a heat you do not enjoy. The split comes down to one thing, which is what the heat is actually warming.

The mechanism, in one paragraph each

A traditional sauna is a heated room. An element warms a pile of stones, the stones warm the air, and the air warms you by convection. Throwing water on the stones flashes it to steam, which is löyly, and it briefly makes the room feel far hotter without changing the thermometer much.

An infrared cabin skips the air. Panels emit infrared radiation that your skin absorbs directly, so you warm up while the room stays at a temperature you could hold a conversation in. That is why an infrared session runs 40 minutes comfortably while a traditional session runs 10 to 20 minutes at a time.

Installation is the decision most people should make on

This is the practical fork, and it is worth settling before comparing anything else. Every traditional heater on the UK market hard-wires to a dedicated circuit run from the consumer unit, which is notifiable work under Approved Document P and adds £300 to £800 on top of the cabin. Infrared cabins plug into a normal 13A socket.

Running cost favours infrared by about four times

What the research actually supports

Most of the well-known evidence is about traditional Finnish saunas, not infrared, and none of it is about steam rooms, which is a separate comparison covered in dry heat against saturated air. The largest body of work comes from Finland, where a 2015 cohort study published in JAMA Internal Medicine followed 2,315 middle-aged men for over 20 years and found frequent sauna bathing associated with lower cardiovascular mortality.

That is an association in an observational study of Finnish men who use hot traditional saunas several times a week, and it does not transfer automatically to a 60°C infrared cabin. Infrared has a smaller evidence base. Buy either one because you want the heat, and treat the health literature as a reason to be unworried rather than a reason to buy.

Which one suits which household

Buy traditional if

  • You want real heat, 80°C and above, and steam off the stones
  • You have the space and budget for a dedicated circuit
  • The sauna is a weekend event shared with other people
  • You are building outdoors, where a garden cabin can be bigger than any indoor room allows

Buy infrared if

  • You want to use it most evenings without thinking about the bill
  • You cannot run a new circuit, or you rent
  • You want it delivered and working this week
  • You find 90°C unpleasant, which plenty of people genuinely do

The compromise options

Two products sit between the categories. A combi heater in a traditional cabin adds a water reservoir so the same room can run as a dry sauna or a softer steam room, which suits households that disagree about heat. At the other end, an infrared blanket gives you radiant heat with no cabin at all for about £399, which is the only real option in a flat with no floor space. Both are worth weighing before the fuel and format are locked in, which is the sequence choosing a home sauna runs through.

Frequently asked questions

Is an infrared sauna as good as a traditional sauna?

It is a different experience rather than a worse one. Infrared gives a long mild session with no installation and a quarter of the running cost. Traditional gives intense heat and steam that infrared cannot reproduce. Which is better depends entirely on the heat you enjoy.

Do infrared saunas make you sweat as much?

Most people sweat comparably, but it takes longer. Infrared sessions run 30 to 45 minutes against 10 to 20 minute rounds in a traditional cabin, so the total sweat is similar over a longer, gentler session.

Which is better for muscle recovery?

Both raise skin and core temperature and increase blood flow, which is the mechanism people are after. Traditional does it faster and harder, infrared does it gently enough to sit through a longer session. No strong evidence separates them for recovery specifically.

Can you put water on the stones in an infrared sauna?

No. Infrared cabins have panels rather than a stove and stones, so there is no löyly and no steam. If throwing water is part of what you want from a sauna, you want a traditional cabin.

Does an infrared sauna need an electrician?

What temperature should an infrared sauna be?

Between 45°C and 60°C for most people, with 65°C as the usual maximum on domestic cabins. Because the panels heat you rather than the air, a lower number on the display feels warmer than it sounds.

Are infrared saunas safe?

For healthy adults, yes, within normal session lengths. The usual heat-bathing cautions apply: hydrate, do not drink alcohol beforehand, and get out if you feel unwell. Anyone pregnant or with a heart condition should ask a doctor first.

What about EMF from infrared panels?

Current carbon and carbon-ceramic panels are engineered as low-EMF and makers publish figures per model. If it matters to you, compare the published number for the specific cabin rather than the category, since it varies by design.

Which holds its value better?

Neither resells well, because both are fitted or semi-fitted items that a buyer has to dismantle and transport. Treat a home sauna as a purchase you will use rather than an asset you will recover money from.

Can one cabin do both?

Not in a single unit at domestic scale, but a combi heater in a traditional cabin gets close by adding steam settings to a dry sauna. Some manufacturers also sell hybrid cabins that pair a traditional heater with infrared panels, at a price premium over either alone.
